Independence Day Playlist: Music from singers who were in successful groups and then became hit solo artists [July 3, 2015]

FRIDAY, JULY 3, 2015 (6pm ET/3pm PT). We’re celebrating the 4th of July with another of our music playlist shows. We’ll feature some of the all-time greatest hits from artists who were part of music groups but declared their independence and went on to become even bigger solo stars. Kroll Call is hosted by Dan J Kroll.

For the first time in our 280-show history, this week, there will be no special guests. Host Dan J Kroll will go solo for the entire hour. Perhaps he’s taking this whole “Independence Day” theme a little too far. But don’t worry — he’ll be kept company by some of the greatest singers of our time.

This week, Kroll Call marks the Independence Day holiday with a special hour of music. Dan will be playing songs by artists who got their start as part of well-known groups but then broke off on their own to become successful solo artists. Think the Beatles, the Supremes, and even Destiny’s Child.

But the list of artists who went solo after being part of a successful group runs surprisingly long — so long that it would be impossible to get to every one in the course of an hour-long show. So it is our hope that listeners will embrace this week’s show as the start of a new, annual Kroll Call tradition — and that if your favorite group-members-turned-solo-artists aren’t included this year, we’ll get to them next year.

There’s still time to get your favorites included in this year’s playlist. Tell us your picks (as well as your favorite songs by that solo artist) below!

Kroll Call airs every Friday at 6pm Eastern/3pm Pacific, and anytime on demand at krollcall.com. Free podcast downloads are available on iTunes and the Voice America Talk Radio Network. Kroll Call is hosted by Internet pioneer and personality Dan J Kroll, who developed the most widely read soap opera web site, soapcentral.com — a site that has been going strong since 1995.
